AIC Placement Testing

AIC has initiated a placement testing procedure for all new students. After admission, students will be notified about testing times for Math, Reading, and Writing. Standardized tests (ACCUPLACER, COMPASS, ACT or SAT) are required of all first-time students only who are under the age of 25 years. Scores are evaluated primarily for the purpose of academic counseling and placement. Students must demonstrate college level proficiency in Math, Reading, and Writing. If a student does not take the ACCUPLACER test they will be automatically enrolled in the 095 level courses.

What is ACCUPLACER
The purpose of ACCUPLACER tests is to provide you with useful information about your academic skills in math, English, and reading. The results of the assessment, in conjunction with your academic background, goals, and interests, are used by academic advisors and counselors to determine your course selection.

Who is required to take the ACCUPLACER test?
All first time entering students are required to take the exam.

 Unless they have:

  1. SAT Verbal (Critical Reading) score of 470 or above
  2. SAT Math score of 450 or above
  3. ACT English 18 or above
  4. ACT Reading 21 or above
  5. ACT Math (Algebra) 22 or above
  6. Successfully completed an appropriate developmental course at another college.
  7. Earned credit in college-level Math and/or English at another college.
  8. Wish to take MAT 095 and ENG 095. Please note that MAT 095 and ENG 095 are not considered a college level course and can not be used towards your general education credits.

Test cost
The ACCUPLACER test is provided free of charge to students.  Students who take the ACCUPLACER test and feel their test results have placed them incorrectly may have one opportunity to challenge their initial placement score and retake the test or portions of the test. The college charges a $10 test challenge fee for each portion of the test or $20 to challenge the entire test. Challenge fees should be paid when the challenge test is taken.  The highest score on all VALID assessments is used to determine final placement into college-level or developmental courses.

All testing must be completed before the end of the first quarter at AIC.
